Pat has been turning wood for most of his life, beginning with simple toys and the occasional tool handle. His passion deepened around the year 2000, following the major ice storm that left an abundance of fallen wood to experiment with. During those early years, he focused mainly on odds and ends—gavels, magic wands, furniture parts, and architectural trim—working entirely on a Sears Craftsman tube lathe with no reverse function or variable speed, relying instead on manual belt and pulley changes.
Around 2012, he gained access to a Delta Reeves-drive lathe, offering a broader speed range and a welcome improvement over constant belt changes, though still lacking a reverse option. In 2015, he purchased his Grizzly G0733, a variable-speed lathe with reverse, which proved to be a true game changer for his craft.
Pat enjoys exploring all forms of turning, including therming, off-axis and multi-axis work, inside-out turning, and anything that breaks from the everyday. Even so, he still loves picking up a bowl gouge or skew, placing a fresh piece of wood between centers, and simply seeing where it takes him.
Most days, he can be found in his shop—often ankle-deep in shavings—just having a good time. You can contact him on our Mentor page.
